First Command: A Psychological Reading of Joseph Conrad’s »The Secret Sharer« and »The Shadow-Line«

Joseph Conrad claimed to be »nothing but a storyteller«. Yet his related stories »The Secret Sharer« and »The Shadow-Line«, which he summarised under the title of his ›Calm-pieces‹, reveal his deep preoccupation with the functioning of the psyche. This study undertakes a close comparison between Conrad’s tales and C.G. Jung’s theory of individuation. It reveals a striking accumulation of similarities in the thinking of the writer and the psychoanalyst.
